‘McCain Talks Tough on Judges But Can He Be Trusted?’

Senator John McCain gave a speech recently on the need to appoint judges that interpret laws rather than legislate from the bench. There was a lot to like about what he had to say on judicial activism. McCain said, “The moral authority of our judiciary depends on judicial self restraint,” and railed against the “systematic abuse” by judges who push their liberal agendas through judicial fiat. He also took issue with “Senate obstructionism” practiced by liberals who are blocking the president’s judicial nominees. The speech seems designed to help McCain firm up his conservative base.

When the now infamous Reverend Jeremiah Wright video surfaced in March, I found myself unable to believe Barack Obama. (1). I found it hard to believe that Barack Obama had never heard Reverend Wright utter a negative word about America. I found it hard to believe that Barack Obama would title one of his autobiographies from one of Reverend Wright’s sermons and then not know what he actually preached.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama tried to deflect a question about his relationship with terrorist Bill Ayers by saying that he “engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago when I was 8-years-old” and that he was now a professor and a neighbor. The real issue is whether Obama shares Ayers’ communist views. Obama admitted to exchanging ideas with Ayers on an irregular basis but did not say what those ideas were. But we know that Ayers, rather than just being a 1960s “radical,” was a member of a Marxist-Leninist communist group.

One hundred and nine years later that label still hangs around the neck of the Democratic Party. The party never adopted the jackass label, but it became an accepted party symbol by the people. Over the course of time political spinners changed the term from jackass to a donkey that was “clever and courageous”, and the party has continued to spin that image.

Barack Obama has a way with words. They trip lightly from his tongue; in fact, some onlookers have swooned during his oratory. No one doubts his speechmaking ability. When opining off-the-cuff, however, he can get into trouble. Case in point: At a recent fundraiser among wealthy donors in San Francisco, some in the audience were preparing to join the Pennsylvania campaign and wondered aloud what questions Pennsylvanians might ask them. In taped remarks, Mr. Obama rightly noted that Pennsylvania is quite diverse and dismissed racism as a barrier to his campaign.

Barack Obama came out this past week in Philly and denied knowing that his pastor (for the last 20 years, not days or months, but 20 years) is a mad black anti-American racist. Not only did Barack deny knowing that his scribe was an unpatriotic, imbalanced bigot, but he also said he didn’t even know Wright was black until last Monday. Obama had been thinking all along that “Uncle” Jeremiah was Chinese or something.
